After ten years abroad, the very wealthy Mr Marcus Ashworth returns home to Devonshire to find his estate in dire need of attention and his head increasingly distracted by thoughts of his friend’s pretty niece.

In no hurry to love again, Mr Ashworth is prepared to fight his feelings every inch of the way―ruthlessly ignoring the fact that his heart and head had been bewitched by Lady Emma Munsford almost from the first moment he laid eyes on her. Throwing himself into the modernisation of his neglected estate does nothing to distract him from the alarming and desperate desire to claim Lady Emma for his wife.

Lady Emma Munsford, her reputation in tatters after an engagement turns sour, is in no hurry to give herself in marriage to any man, least of all her uncle’s ill mannered neighbour―a fact which Mr Ashworth knows all too well.

Thus when a snow blizzard comes to Devon, and Mr Ashworth finds a way to be entirely alone with the lady―long enough to compromise her―he thinks his prayers have been answered…

Stopped reading at about 65%. While I like this author's style the characters grated on me the entire time. Emma hated Marcus and he,for some reason completely elusive to the reader, was very attracted to her. He has ruined her in the eyes of society and they are compelled to marry. This after she had been 'ruined' years before by a previous suitor who had broken their engagement. There was no romance in this tale. Zero. The dialogue, while snappy at times, devolved into rehashing how she hated him and would never court her with romantic hoopala. He wants his wedding night. There are many contrivances to keep them from sharing a bed or room, loads of misunderstandings and lack of communication. When her former fiancee shows up in disguise to blackmail her, it just became something I didn't want to read anymore. Yet, I trudged on until I couldn't bear it any longer. I hate to give up on this author because I rather liked The Rake and the Bluestocking, but having disliked 2 of 3 it isn't looking good for her.

The Honourable Gentleman The Regency Gentlemen Series Book 3 edition by Norma Darcy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The author apparently chose to forget or ignore all of the encounters the main characters had had in previous books, and started fresh with them. This was disappointing as I'd gotten the book specifically because of those encounters, and wanted to see how things turned out for the two. But, overall, it was still an interesting story.
First, it took me awhile to realize that this was really one of the books in this series. When I did I became impatient and a little disappointed because it seemed as though Marcus and Emma would be arguing with each other. I didn't expect that they would ever get it together. Emma didn't seem to have the proper instructions for a young woman. Just wasn't what I expected. Would I buy it knowing this? Yes,but only because it's in the series.
We met Emma in book 2 and she was a normal lady. In this book she was the meanest, most grumpy, awful lady. What would have possibly caught the hero's interest? Even the ending showed two people bickering. Not good.
I hated the main female character. She was mean, unfeeling, and selfish. I appreciated Ms. Darcy’s second novel’s strong willed, pleasant, and witty characters. Secondly, where was the romance?

With all of that said I loved the brotherly banter. In fact I love all of the banter in her novels when there’s playful teasing. I wish to read more of that.

I still would like to give Ms. Darcy a chance. Any ideas what happened with her forth installment. The Beautiful and the Wicked???
So disappointed!
All books in this trilogy are weak.
In any life situation there would not be a happy ending to this kind of plot.
But this book is worse!
The feminine character has a strong lack of stability. No one in their right mind would think that this(these) woma(e)n is/are smart. No one.
We women have our moods, I know I have them, but to this extent? No man, even a fictional one, is able to navigate this kind of crazy and stay sane.
I know it is a story, but it is not a fairy tale. It is a horrible story.
It is derogatory to women, a total misrepresentation of women intellect.
The dialogue in the first chapters was so clever and enjoyable! I just knew this was going to be a wonderful story. And then things went a bit south -- at least for me.

The heroine is a lovely young woman, the daughter of an earl and rich in her own right. She had been engaged but the fellow jilted her. That had been a small blow to her standing in society and she made a comeback. Now she is once again a desired guest at any gathering. She is being courted by titled gentlemen and her family has hopes of her marrying a gentleman of the ton.

She is visiting her uncle and her sister, who is due to give birth at any time, lives nearby. Her uncle's neighbor, our hero, offers to drive her to her sister's estate as the weather looks a little dicey. Our introduction to her -- she is laying in a puddle of snow and mud. The hero's curricle is wrecked and the weather has taken a nasty turn. The couple has to spend the night in a nearby barn.

The hero had been living in India for ten years and had made his fortune. Back home once again, he is trying to get the family property back to being prosperous. He was jilted at the altar by a woman. The story was that he hadn't cared enough to go after her -- that he had more interest in horses and hunting than any female. This is an accusation that continues to follow him. He is seen as cold and unfeeling.

While he doesn't come across as lover like as far as wooing with flowery words, he is a respectable -- though untitled -- man. He is good to his tenets and staff. He is also rich -- which is the reason he is acceptable to the heroine's family. She of course is basically ruined after spending the night alone with him. It didn't help matters that he kissed her when they were in full view of many people.

The heroine becomes an absolute shrew and acts like a spoiled brat. And while she has been out for a few years, she seems woefully ignorant of the pleasure to be had between a husband and wife. Someone botched that part of her education. So she rejects the hero at every turn.

There is the possibility the hero has a mistress, and that irritates her -- although she doesn't want to consummate their marriage. The hero is a plain spoken man and doesn't know how to woo this one woman.

There is treachery and blackmail. The heroine resorts to the usual behavior of not telling her husband of the threats being made. Shame? Pride? I say stupidity as she eventually takes things further.

The heroine snipes constantly. She throws her title in his face during one argument. He knows he is considered beneath her by her family, though his purse was acceptable. She is supposed to be beautiful and witty, and he was head over heels in love with her. But why? She behaved in such an awful way toward him. What was there to love?

The writing is so smart and engaging at times. I wish the heroine had turned out more like the writing. Each chapter brought her lower in my regard.

However I do recommend this one. I would have given it five stars if there hadn't been the old plot of misunderstandings and stupid behavior.
