This ebook is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. According to Project Gutenberg, it was originally part of a collection titled Mysteries and Adventures which was published in 1889.I downloaded the Free Kindle version and found it to be 330 locations. This isn't a story containing Holmes or Watson. It is a stand alone short written by Doyle - and not a very good one.
*** slight spoiler alert ***
The story takes place in a Perth, Australia prison. An unnamed doctor is listening to a story told by an inmate. the prisoner is Wolf Tone Maloney who is serving six months for battery.
The tale the man tells is a whiny, pouty, 'whoa-is-me' tale about his recent years. He was part of a gang of thieves and murderers who were apprehended for their crimes. Instead of going to the gallows like the rest of his group, Maloney decides to turn evidence on them to save his own neck.
It's a painful short story about how unfair life is, the government should thank him, etc. Page after page talks about him running from vigilantes and police.
DON'T download this ebook because it's missing the last three or four paragraphs. This is a newspaper article that wraps up some of the story elements. You can find the full story for free online.
I suggest Amazon fix or remove this ebook.

My Friend The Murderer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Arthur Conan Doyle 9781484170632 Books Reviews
it was interesting. but there was no movement it was all a story that someone was telling in a jail cell it wasn't actually happining. Over all I am glad I read I could read
Classic literature - what more can you say.
Great Transaction - would do business with again
I didn't expect it to be Sherlock Holmes, but it fell too far below that standard to be truly enjoyable. More like a warm up for the author prior to getting serious about a story.
THANK YOU to whoever is responsible for getting these classics in eBook form. I have loved re-reading all that I have downloaded over & over, just like when I was a kid.
My Friend the Murderer is written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of the Sherlock Holmes fame. I have read many of Doyle's non-Sherlock stories and have not found any to be of their high quality. But that is not to say that his other works are not very good, because many are. In this story, a doctor working at a penitentiary in Australia comes across a famous criminal and strikes up a casual acquaintance with him. The criminal, Wolf Tone Maloney, was famous for turning state's evidence on his own gang, which earned him a pardon but his old friends the hangman's noose. Maloney it seems, is in prison to protect him from the old gang's numberous friends who want to settle the score. The story is about the trials and tribulations of Maloney as he attempts to start anew. It is interesting in that it provides some insight on what people would think of back at the turn of the 20th century of a criminal who would make such a choice. It is a fairly entertaining story and it is very short; you can probably read the whole tale in one sitting with a big cup of coffee. The ending in my book was abbreviated; it ends with the Doctor saying he read an article about Maloney in the paper but the article is missing from the printed story. The ending was already disclosed so the missing piece is realy not necessary for the reader to finish the story. I would rate this as 3 stars.
Sigh. It's not a Sherlock Holmes story and none of Doyle's other works quite measure up to that genius. Certainly, not this one.
Mercifully, though, it's short.
The setting of the story is in an Australian prison. A doctor at the prison is told that he should go listen to the amazing story of one of the inmates. The prisoner's name is Maloney and it's questionable if he is crazy or just really paranoid. Maloney was part of a gang of robbers and privateers who were captured. In order to make his own sentence lighter, he turned evidence against his mates. Now, he has no homeland and no friends. His enemies are all around, both inside the prison and out, both within the law and without, and he has to rely on the police and prison guards to keep him safe.
Maloney leads a very lonely and miserable existence, but that doesn't make him any kinder or remorseful. Instead, he is sour and bitter to everyone, blaming others for the situation he now finds himself in. He repeatedly escapes, only to be recaptured by criminals and then has no choice but to voluntarily go back to prison, the same one he started from.
The narrator is so not interest in anything that is going on, showing no more emotion that a wall. In that, we were alike with this story. So miserable all the way through.
